Is Korina running for Senator in 2007?
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 04/10/2006
For the record, it was Funfare which broke the story about Loren Legarda’s decision to run for Senator in 1998 and for Vice President in 2004. Same with Johnny Flavier (then writing the column Barrio Breeze for The STAR) whose senatorial bid was "announced" by Dessa during The STAR’s Christmas party in Dec. 1997 at the Club Filipino.
Here and now, Funfare is predicting (with a hard knock on wood) that Korina Sanchez will run for Senator in next year’s elections – that is, if nothing derails the 2007 polls. It’s sooner than you think. You wake up one morning and realize that the campaign season is about to start.
Latest surveys indicate that majority of the Top 20 preferred senatoriables are from the opposition, with Korina as the only non-politician included, landing at No. 5 spot. Highly-qualified (with her boyfriend, Sen. Mar Roxas, behind and beside her, no doubt giving her valuable pointers), Korina has been courted time and again to run (for Senator or other public office) but she always said no, thank you.
"It’s quite flattering," said Korina in a phone interview, "but I believe that mud-wrestling is much better watched from outside the ring than you being a participant in it."
Recently given the USTv Award for Preferred News Personality by UST college students (and named one of Anak TV’s Most Preferred TV Personalities for the second straight year), Korina sounded cheerful and, yes, contented not only with her love life (is marriage in sight?) but also with her career.
"I’m in cruise-control right now," she added, "and I’m enjoying the stability. My radio program Tambalang Failon at Sanchez (DZMM 630 khz, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday thru Friday) is on top, my TV show (Rated K, early Sunday nights on ABS-CBN) is doing well and my occasional stints on Tonight on ANC is getting good feedback and reviews."
Okay, is she running or not? Yes or no?
"Next question, please!"
If Korina is not running in 2007, is she, according to rumors, running away from ABS-CBN and moving to RPN Channel 9 as soon as the sequestered station is bought by, again according to rumors, Manny Pangilinan and a partner?
"Crazy how the rumors go," laughed Korina. "I’ve made no such commitment. I don’t even have any idea who are actually bidding for those sequestered stations (including IBC Channel 13)."
